Visual depictions of blackness in American Art


Emily Hanna is Senior Curator and Department Head of Africa and the Americas at the Birmingham Museum of Art.  She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, and held a Whitney Doctoral Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in between periods of fieldwork in West Africa. Prior to joining the Birmingham Museum of Art staff in 2002, she taught art history for ten years, first at Spelman College and then at Georgia State University, where she served as chair of the art history department. She has organized over two dozen exhibitions on the arts of Africa, the African-Diaspora, and the Americas, and her exhibition on Haitian flags will open at the museum on December 19th, 2015.
